The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is the largest global development institution focused exclusively on the private sector in developing countries. IFC was seeking to increase energy access amongst low income households in Asia.
Intellecap analyzed 7 Asian markets - India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia, Cambodia and Philippines - for their potential for solar off-grid lighting, challenges to scale and opportunities to catalyze private sector activity. The team interviewed over 150 experts and practitioners across Asia to gain market insights and considerations and identify design elements for a meaningful program intervention.
The study resulted in the publication of Lighting Asia: Solar Off-Grid Lighting, that serves as a reference for private sector actors who seek to engage energy markets in Asia. In 2012, Intellecap's work informed the design and launch of IFC's Lighting India program that aims to provide clean, safe and affordable off grid lighting to 2 million Indians in 3 years.
